The 'Grit vs Science' Continuum

Training prescriptions should fluctuate on this continuum

Grit --------------------------------------------Science

When working with youth athletes. It is important for them to have the foundation of grit but understand scientific concepts. There will be points where concepts may be too complex for the athlete to understand at that moment, so that would let you know that you can adjust on the continuum. Having individuals primarily train in military type workouts isn't best for their long-term improvement. Perfect form is in the best interest in the athlete to achieve, but sometimes you have to let the athlete work through bad reps and sets to understand the difference. You cant have young athletes believe exercise = bootcamp. Every workout doesn't have to be killer. Work on physiological improvements and scientific concepts. But Every workout doesn't have to be perfectly programmed.

Contact Sports & Back Squatting

How much and how often should a contact sport athlete back squat ?

If they're able to achieve 2x their body weight for a maximal effort, is there any benefit in gaining more strength ?

At when is the point of diminishing returns ?

Is it more valuable to prioritize unilateral loading versus bilateral ?

Should the strain of the season shy performance coaches away from heavier loads during the season to maintain strength, if no how much volume should they prescribe per week/month ?

Is bar velocity speed more important that total load ?
